How to create an author’s street team

Would you love to involve your fans in your book marketing? An author’s street team is a cool and fun way to do so.

What is a street team?

A street team or influencers fan-base is a group of volunteers to band together to promote an author and his or her books. Members of a street team are motivated by their love to an author’s work to promote it to as many people as possible.

There are several ways how those fans can help with book promotion: handing out materials such as bookmarks and flyers, posting reviews and book recommendations online, sharing author’s news such as free Kindle days on their social media, requesting the book from area libraries and bookstores, volunteering at their kid’s school for organizing an author’s visit, spreading word of mouth and much much more.

There are various benefits of an author’s street team: A supportive group of readers turns a solitary activity in a group one and can help you with their opinions on characters and book covers. They can serve as beta readers or brainstorming partners, making it so much more fun for everybody involved.

Besides (hopefully) increased sales you are getting to know your die-hard fans. You give them a little more personal glimpse into your life and career and let them know you a little better, too. This could be the beginning of some amazing relationships!

What does this mean for you?

You can easily set up a street team to gather your fans to help you share your work. Street teams allow authors to direct their fans in a way that will help promote their books while also providing a way to give back to their fans for their loyalty and support. You can choose to start a street team at any time in your book’s life, both before your book hits the market and after it’s been available.

Sounds great, right? So how do you set one up?  It’s pretty easy if you follow those six steps:

  • Recruit volunteers on your website or with social media posts
  • Vet your street team
  • Promote your team and create a “street team central” such as a Facebook group
  • Mail welcome packets
  • Organize weekly or monthly challenges
  • Establish a reward system

And don’t forget to have a lot of fun!
