Today is the last day of the old year, of a whole decade. I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, my way of life is: If you don’t like something, change it now and don’t wait until a particular date. If you’d like to learn something new, start now.
But I’d like to take a moment to look back to 2019, to its ups and downs, to its lights and shadows. I’d like to reflect, to appreciate, and to learn from all the small and big things that happened.
2019 was an incredible, exhausting, crazy, and joyful year. I’ve started my own business in a foreign country with high expectations, a lot of enthusiasm, and less strategy. And boy, what have I learned in the first months! I’ve learned new systems and tools, I’ve learned where my strengths and my weaknesses are, what I need to improve, to keep or to let go. I’ve struggled and doubted in the beginning – more than once. Meeting my wonderful coach Susan changed everything. After only a few sessions, I was so crystal clear about my passion, my ideal clients and the things I can do for them. After my business relaunch in September, everything has changed: I don’t say “I need to…” anymore, I say, “I’d like to…”. I say this because I LOVE what I’m doing, it’s a pleasure and something I look forward to Every. Single. Day.
This year also had a couple of tearful and longing moments for my old home, my parents, my sister, my nephews, my old friends. I know that this feeling will never change and that this is the price we have to pay for our expat life. I read a sentence a while ago, which describes it best: As an expat, you will always have your heart at two places.
And of course, there were thousands of moments of pure joy, love, silliness, laughter, and craziness in our family. That’s life with three wild little girls and I love every minute of it. But they really should stop growing so fast!
Last but not least, I’ve found wonderful friends that are really close to my heart. Nadja, Hande, Ruth, and Tine – thank you for being real friends. I love you.
What do you see when you look back to 2019? Share it with me in the comments, I would love to hear from you!
